Dr. Lea Pulkkinen started the ongoing Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development in 1968, co-chaired the Longitudinal Study of Health and Behavior in Finnish Twin Children, and conducted an intervention study in Finnish schools for the application of longitudinal research findings
. She has served as the Head of the Department of Psychology, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Founding Director of Family Research Center, amongst other positions
Currently she chairs at the EU level the Expert Panel for Psychology of the European Reference Index for Humanities, and was a member of the International Advisory Panel of NORFACE.
One of Professor Pulkkinen’s main interests in her long-term longitudinal studies has been the role of family in human development. Notably, she contributed to the setting up of the Family Research Center at the University of Jyväskylä in 1990, and to an amendment of Finnish school legislation in 2004.
She has made many public addresses, authored over 300 scientific papers, and has received numerous awards for her work.
