The institute was founded in 1994 and is affiliated with the Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg. It is an institution of the Bavarian State Ministry of Labour and Social Order, Family and Women and is located in Bamberg. It is directed by Professor Dr. Hans-Peter Blossfeld, and Dr. Marina Rupp is vice-director. The academic staff actually consists of 15 members and is composed interdisciplinarily. They represent the fields of sociology, psychology, economy and education.

The ifb’ s main goals are to conduct basic as well as applied research in the social sciences, as well as to provide policy advice and scientific evaluation of demonstration projects. The institute’s research programme is established by the institute’s advisory board, consisting of the Institute’s director, two full professors of the University of Bamberg, one representative of the Institute’s scientists, and one representative of the Bavarian State Ministry of Labour and Social Order, Family and Women.

Using various quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, the institute aims to provide up-to date analyses on various topics, including:

    • the social, economic, and legal living conditions of families,
    • the impacts of labor market and workplace on families and parenting
    • recent developments in family structure
    • gender relations and the changing roles of family members
    • prevention- and support-initiatives for children and adolescents
    • developments in family-related policy at the national and international level

Research results are regularly disseminated via a series of “ifb-research reports”, the Journal of Family Research ("Zeitschrift für Familienforschung") as well as congress proceedings and workshop reports.
