Founded in 1963 by the Central Statistical Office in consent with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Demographic Research Institute is the national centre of basic and applied demographic research in Hungary. DRI specialises in population issues and carries our research in population development, fertility, nuptiality, mortality and migration and always puts a large emphasis on the social context of demographic processes. Long-term population model calculations and projections; design and analysis of social surveys and opinion polls on values and perceptions of population and family issues, policy-analysis are but a few of the numerous activities DRI carries out to improve scientific understanding of the multifaceted interrelationships between social and demographic processes. Background of researchers at DRI cover a wide range of social sciences including demography, sociology, history, geography and economics.

Having a long experience in international comparative research, the Institute has for long been integrated into the international scholarly community. European comparative research projects carried out in DRI include the Generations and Gender Survey (GGP); the Population Policy Acceptance Study (DIALOG); the Reproductive decision-making in a macro-micro perspective (REPRO), the Needs for Female Immigrants and their Integration in Ageing Societies (FEMAGE); and the Major Ageing and Gender Issues In Europe (MAGGIE). DRI is also a member of Population Europe, the European Population Partnership which is a newly established collaborative network of Europe’s leading demographic research institutes and centers.

Regular publications of the Institute include a Research Reports Series (in Hungarian), Working Papers on Population, Family and Welfare (in English), the quarterly journal Demográfia, with a yearly English issue (Demography), and a quarterly newsletter KorFa (in Hungarian).
