The Austrian Institute for Family Studies (ÖIF) is an independent, internationally recognised, research institution focusing on empirical family research. Our institute was founded in 1994, the 'International year of the family'. In 2006, the ÖIF was integrated into the University of Vienna and has been a legal body under public law since then.

The Institute engages in both basic and application-oriented research to study the wide variety and changes in family relations from the perspective of children, women and men. As an interdisciplinary institute with sociologists, psychologists, economists, political scientists, and historians, we study generational and gender relations in the context of individual perspectives, social relations, structural (legal, political) implications and multicultural perspectives.

As a public body and a well known family research institute, it is our mission not only to expand empirical knowledge, but also to bridge the gap between research results and social reality. We have a strong commitment to serve as a platform bringing researchers, policy makers, social workers, and the general public together, and to promote a better understanding of today's patterns and needs within family relations.
