Union Nationale des Associations Familiales (UNAF) was set up by the post-war Council of Resistance, and later enshrined in statute as a permanent liaison on family issues.

It was given the remit of:

    - Providing public authorities with opinions on family-related issues and proposing measures that address the material and moral interests of families.
    - Being the representative of all families towards the public authorities.
    - Delivering certain family services.
    - Upholding the material and moral interests of families.

UNAF is diverse, pluralist, outward-looking, and constantly evolving. It has a membership of 100 French departments, 22 French regions, and 70 family movements. There are currently 44 associate members representing a range of sectors including family and child community work, family assistance, youth, and holidays/free time. Between these sectors, UNAF speaks for the nearly 2 million families in France: more than 6 million people in total.

Over time, UNAF has negotiated the rounded family policy that today gives France encouraging prospects for tomorrow’s growth and increased funding for social protection. This policy is based on republican precepts of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.
