Abstract: This special contribution to FAMILYPLATFORM reviews current research on mothers, using findings from the 2010 Survey of Mothers in Europe to illustrate points and give respondents a voice on their family wellbeing. The reviewed literature includes well‐known studies on family related topics funded by the European Commission, the OECD, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Other bibliographical sources include the UNICEF‐Innocenti reports on the wellbeing of children, and the United Nations Institute for Social Development Reports on Unpaid Care Work.
A major finding of this work is that mothers are rarely recognised as specific and distinct participants with a special function and identity. Even more rarely are they given the opportunity to speak with their own voice on policy matters that directly affect them.
